From Research to the Applied Setting: Breaking Down the Three-Legged Stool of "Evidence Based Practice"

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is central to ethical and effective ABA services, yet it is often misunderstood as simply “using evidence-based interventions.” This CEU clarifies EBP as a clinical decision-making framework composed of three essential and interdependent components: best available research evidence, clinical expertise, and client values and contextual factors. Drawing from contemporary literature in psychology and applied behavior analysis, this presentation breaks down how imbalance across these components can lead to common pitfalls in applied practice. Through applied examples, attendees will learn how to move beyond checklists of interventions and instead use EBP as a flexible, ongoing process to guide assessment, treatment selection, and data-based decision making.
