About This Event
Harm reduction is often treated as outside the scope of applied behavior analysis, associated primarily with substance use and needle exchange programs. This CEU traces harm reduction's origins, including its documented roots in the Black Panther Party's community health work and its institutional history beginning with 1985 needle exchange programs, through to its current application across eating disorders, self-injury, and general healthcare settings. Next, the CEU provides an overview contingency management, a direct application of operant conditioning, and describes applied behavior analysis's own contribution to this field rather than an import from elsewhere, and is currently the only treatment with significant evidence of effectiveness as a standalone approach for stimulant use disorder. The CEU closes with a composite case example showing how a BCBA can incorporate harm reduction principles into case coordination while remaining within scope and applying clear ethical safeguards.
