About This Event
Prompting is how we get a response to occur so it can be reinforced, but many programs apply a single clinic-wide hierarchy (usually most-to-least or least-to-most) to every learner and every skill, deliver prompts before the learner has a chance to respond, and never specify how prompts will be faded. In this episode, hosts Sean Yocum and Michael Carrero argue that prompt dependency is often a product of staff and organizational contingencies, such as rapid prompting that keeps data sheets clean, trials-per-hour benchmarks, and reinforcing prompted and independent responses equally. They review research showing that no single prompting procedure is best for every learner: Libby and colleagues (2008) found that most-to-least prompting produced fewer errors but least-to-most was faster for some learners, and that adding a delay to most-to-least prompting produced nearly as rapid acquisition with fewer errors; Seaver and Bourret (2014) showed that individualized assessments of prompt types and fading procedures produced generally reliable, learner-specific results; and the delayed-prompting literature on transfer of stimulus control (Touchette & Howard, 1984; Cengher et al., 2018). The hosts distinguish prompt types from fading procedures and recommend that every program state the prompt type, the fading method, and the rationale for that learner and skill. They describe brief prompt comparisons, wait time trained through behavioral skills training, written fading rules set before teaching begins, and graphing prompt level alongside accuracy so teams can make data-based decisions. Participants will leave with a prompting-plan and fade-rule worksheet.

Sean Yocum, MA, BCBA, LBA (BACB certification #1-22-57936), is the owner of Hickory Learning Group in Hickory, NC, and co-host of the Rad N Bad Podcast. He also serves as Hickory Learning Group's ACE Coordinator and runs the Underground Conference, a monthly speaker series for the ABA field. Sean grew up as the big brother of a younger brother with autism, and he has worked as a behavior analyst across home, clinic, school, and community settings with hundreds of families. He is a strong advocate for radical caregiver involvement, built on one idea: success is measured by how many hours families no longer need us. On the mic, Sean opens with the hard question and says the quiet part out loud. Off the mic, he coaches travel baseball. Michael Carrero, BCBA, LBA (BACB certification #1-22-57932), is co-host of the Rad N Bad Podcast and presents with Hickory Learning Group. On the show he is the practical clinician and the steady hand next to Sean's volume. He asks the clarifying questions, plays devil's advocate, brings in examples from his own clinical work, and turns every debate into what to do next: behavioral skills training, clear definitions, and goals that fit the person. His OpenCEU workshop, Roadmapping: A Guide to Lasting Independence, introduces a person-centered planning framework for building long-term learner independence. Mike closes nearly every episode with a short, practical takeaway, because, in his words, "curiosity should always be stronger than certainty."

Learning Objectives
1

Distinguish between a prompt type and a prompt-fading procedure, and identify both in a written skill-acquisition program.

2

Identify at least three staff or organizational contingencies (e.g., prompting before the learner can respond, trials-per-hour benchmarks, equal reinforcement for prompted and independent responses) that can produce prompt dependency.

3

Summarize findings from comparative and assessment-based prompting research, including most-to-least prompting with a delay and individualized prompt assessments.

4

Write a program-level prompting plan that specifies the prompt type, the fading method, the rationale, and data-based rules for moving down, moving back up, and responding to a stall.

5

Describe how graphing prompt level alongside accuracy supports data-based decisions about prompt fading.
