About This Event
Discrete Trial Training (DTT) is widely recognized as one of the most effective, empirical teaching technologies in Applied Behavior Analysis, yet it is frequently criticized as rigid, unnatural, or compliance-oriented. In this episode of the Rad N Bad Podcast, hosts Sean Yocum and Mike Carrero unpack the clinical mechanics and ethical pitfalls of DTT through a balanced, objective lens. Designed for front-line Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) and supervising clinicians, this course evaluates when tight stimulus control and high-rate trial repetition are clinically necessary (e.g., establishing foundational discriminations, early communication repertoires, or safety skills) versus when mass-trialing becomes a substitute for functional instruction. The hosts analyze the critical distinction between rote, sterile table drills ("DTT as a culture") and dynamic behavioral engineering paired with Natural Environment Teaching (NET). Direct-care providers will learn how to identify prompt dependency, avoid artificial instructional control, and implement systematic transfer of stimulus control so that learned skills survive when the clinical prompts and token boards are removed.

Learning Objectives
1

Identify the core structural components of a Discrete Trial (RBT Task List C-03), distinguishing between clear discriminative stimuli (SD), motivating operations (MO), prompt hierarchies, and differential reinforcement.

2

Contrast Discrete Trial Training (DTT) with Natural Environment Teaching (NET) procedures (RBT Task List C-04), evaluating how learner-initiated vs. adult-led arrangements impact motivation, spontaneous communication, and social validity.

3

Recognize indicators of prompt dependency and faulty stimulus control (RBT Task List C-11), identifying when a client is responding to unintentional teacher cues rather than the relevant environmental stimuli.Implement stimulus transfer and generalization procedures (RBT Task List C-12) to systematically transition learned target responses from contrived table materials to novel people, natural settings, and functional reinforcers.

4

Apply client-dignity and assent standards (RBT Ethics Code 2.0) during structured teaching sessions to prevent coercive compliance drills and respect non-verbal signals of distress.
